My Startup Shield™ was born from a front-row seat to a problem almost no one was talking about. As a Global Influencer in Innovation, Startup Judge, and former United States Patent Examiner, I’ve reviewed thousands of ideas — and in pitch after pitch, I started hearing something that stopped me cold.

When it came time for my question, I’d ask founders one simple thing: “Are you protected?” And far too often, their answer was “No.” That moment always hit hard, because I knew what it meant. Their idea, their dream, their edge — already exposed. One pitch, one post, one conversation could cost them global rights forever.

 

Then came the founders who said, “Yes, we have patented technology.” But when I looked closer, it wasn’t true. Some had filed the wrong paperwork. Others had abandoned applications they thought were active or trusted advice from people who didn’t understand the rules.

That’s when I realized this wasn’t just a founder problem. It was a systemic failure in startup education.

As a former U.S. Patent Examiner, I spent years deciding which inventions earned patents and which didn’t. I know what gets approved, what gets rejected, and what gets overlooked. But I’m also a founder and investor. One who knows the pressure of pitching, raising, and protecting what you’ve built while the clock is ticking.
